I’m not exactly sure what is going on in the new “Paris” music video from The Chainsmokers. Some woman is desperately sad, that much is true. The ‘Smokers seem to be slightly sad, too, but mostly they’re just walking through a field in Los Angeles.
This woman, on the other hand, goes on a sort of Dorothy-in-the-tornado adventure in her super-nice LA home. I am not sure if her house is floating because she is so distraught, like her pain literally lifts the house out of the ground in some kind of metaphorical absent-mindedness, or what. The star of the Mister Whitmore-directed clip, Victoria’s Secret angel Martha Hunt, seems to be enjoying it slightly, hanging out the window doing the whole hair-in-the-wind bit, but eventually her melancholy overwhelms her and she jumps to her doom.
She doesn’t die, of course. The Chainsmokers can’t have beautiful women dying in their videos. She lands safely on her bed. Maybe she is just having nightmares. I don’t know why she couldn’t have just had a nightmare in Paris. Maybe the travel wasn’t worth the cost of the video. Maybe it all makes more sense in the context of the upcoming album’s full concept storyline.
The duo’s upcoming full-length concept album, Memories: Do Not Open, will consist of all new music besides lead single “Paris,” which debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. They’ve also released a remix package for “Paris,” which features reworked versions of the song by VINAI, LOUDPVCK, Pegboard Nerds, Jewelz & Sparks, Party Thieves and FKYA.
